Virtualbox is an open source virtual machine with a function as a virtualization machine to install OS (Operation System) so that it allows you to run multiple OSes without having to dual boot and without having to fear losing your system data.
This is important if you want to test or simulate the installation of an operating system. And on this occasion I will explain how to use this virtualbox, starting from the installation process to creating a virtual machine. Curious? just take a look at the following reviews.
How to Use Virtualbox for Beginners
A. Installing VirtualBox
1. Before we do the installation, of course we have to download the virtual box installation file first, you can download it for free via the following link. Choose the package according to the operating system you are using and then download it.
2. After you finish downloading, install your virtualbox by double-clicking the exe file. Then then the welcome window will open. Click Next >.
3. In the Custom Setup window, use only the default settings. Then click Next >.
4. In the next window there are several options regarding shortcuts to access your virtual box. Please check all of them then click Next >.

5. In the next window a warning will appear that installing the Virtual Box Networking feature will temporarily disconnect you from the network connection. If you agree you can continue the installation by clicking Yes.
6. In the final window, your virtualbox is ready to be installed. To finish, click Install and wait for the installation process to complete.
7. After the installation process is complete in the last section there is a notification that the installation process has been completed. To open your virtualbox, please checklist "Start Oracle VM Virtualbox 5.18 After Installation" and click Finish.
B. Creating a Virtual Machine
1. The first step to creating a virtual machine is by clicking the “New” button on the top left of the screen or using the Ctrl + N shortcut.
1. The first step to creating a virtual machine is by clicking the “New” button on the top left of the screen or using the Ctrl + N shortcut.
2. After clicking “New” you will be asked to enter the name, type and version of your virtual machine. Enter the Type & Version according to the OS you want to install later. When finished, click Next.
3. On the next screen you will be asked to determine the size of RAM that will be allocated to the virtual machine. Virtualbox provides size recommendations based on the operating system to be installed, but you can adjust it according to your needs. The more RAM you allocate, the smoother your virtual machine will be. However, you need to save some, so that your regular operating system can still run. When finished, click Next.
4. The next step is to create a virtual hard drive that will be used to install the operating system and programs on your virtual machine later. There are 3 settings options that you can use:
- Do not add a virtual hard disk: This option is used for advanced level where the virtual hard disk will be created in a separate setup after the virtual machine creation is complete.
- Create a virtual hard disk now: This option is used to create a new virtual hard disk at the same time as creating a virtual machine.
- Use an existing virtual hard disk file: This option is used to use a virtual hard disk that you have previously created.
For now, because you don't have a virtual hard disk, select Create a virtual hard disk now and press Create.
5. Select the hard disk file type that we will use.
There are 3 types of hard disk files, namely:
If you don't want to use it for other virtualization software choose "VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)". Then select Next >.
- VDI (Virtualbox Disk Image) is the native format of Virtual Box
- VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) is a native format for Microsoft Virtual PC
- VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk) is the native format of VMWare
If you don't want to use it for other virtualization software choose "VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)". Then select Next >.
6. In the next step you will be asked to choose how the virtual hard disk is stored on your physical hard disk. There are two setting options, namely:
- Dynamically Allocated, using physical hard disk capacity based on the number of virtual hard disks, not based on a predetermined size.
- Fixed Size, the capacity of the physical hard disk that is used based on the capacity of the virtual hard disk created.
7. In the final step is to determine the Location & Size of your virtual hard disk. Please adjust according to your needs. It's a good idea to adjust the system requirements of the OS to be installed. When finished, click Create, your virtual machine has been successfully created.
C. Run the Virtual Machine
When finished creating the virtual machine, all you have to do next is run it by clicking the Start button.
The first time you run the virtual machine, you still have to install the operating system, just like on a normal computer, this means you have to prepare the installation DVD or ISO file for your operating system. Make sure the ISO Type & Version you have is the same as the one you set in Step 2 on Creating a Virtual Machine.

After determining the location of the ISO file, the next step is to click Start and install the OS.
How easy is it? Now you can run 2 or more operating systems without dual booting. You can explore a variety of operating systems without having to worry about deleted files on your hard disk.
